Yakima is the New Bellevue

I've been known to be harsh on Eastern Washington from time to time (I've also been harsh on the Seattle hippies). But I do think there is great potential espicially if we grow the cities. Anyway, I'm really glad that Progressive Majority and others are so active in making the change happen.

Last weekend Progressive Majority, with the help of the United Farm Workers, SEIU Local 775, the Washington State Democrats, the Washington State Hispanic/Latino Democratic Caucus, and Teamster Union Local 760, and L-PAC (Latino Pac), began what is to be the beginning of a long range push to elect progressive at the local level in Eastern Washington.

And so, over the weekend of April 1st we had over 45 candidates and campaign managers join us to talk about their races for city council, county commissioner, county clerk, county auditor, and state legislator. They traveled to Yakima from as far away as Pullman and Kettle Falls. One candidate left the house at 4am on Saturday to get to the training on time!

We brought in bilingual trainers from around the county---Rudy Lopez from Wellstone Action and Kris Garcia, Progressive Majority’s Arizona State Director---who joined Progressive Majority trainers Dean Nielsen and Jennie Blackton to teach candidates about:

• Making the decision to run for political office (at any level: School Board, City Council, County Commission & beyond!)

• Effectively mobilizing you base communities of color

• Campaign Fundamentals: Fundraising, Voter Contact, Message Development, & Field Organizing

I'd like George W. Bush to give me a pony. I mean as long as we're asking him for things that he won't do. Not that I've really got a place to keep a pony.

Crashing the Gate Stuff

Another reminder, it's tomorrow at 7:00 at the labor temple

2800 1st Ave, Hall 1

Then a couple the following day:

Marymoor Park starting at 11:30 AM

6046 West Lake Sammamish Pkwy NE
Redmond, WA

Orca Books starting at 7:00

509 E 4th Ave
Olympia, WA

I'll definitely be at the one downtown, probably at the one in Marymoore, and maybe be at the one in Oly. I do love Orca Books. I've only read two and a half chapters. I agree on why the R's are bad, kinda disagree about interest groups, and totally agree about consultants.

Shocking Revelations About McGavick

In a failed attempt to be more like Goldy, I've decided to look at Mike McGavick's web site and make up stuff. It's like journalism, only it's much quicker and I can go back to the project that's consumed me since 1952, typing random "data" into a spreadsheet to prove that Stevenson won the election.

Anyway my first revelation is that McGavick seems to have made up his title. His bio page on his website says, "Prior to joining Safeco, Mike held a number of positions at Chicago-based CNA Financial Corporation starting in 1995." Yet from my "research" I've discovered that there was no position called "a number of positions." This is as disturbing as I am phony.

Second, where's the formality? The page keeps calling him "Mike." He's a man who keeps kicking off his run for the Senate. You'd think Mr. McGavick would be more appropriate. But no, it's Mike this and Mike that. He has no sense of the importance of the Senate! Did he tell his underlings at CNA financial to call him Mike when he was a "number of positions," or is a sense of decorum something that you leave behind to the corporate world?

Finally, does he eat babies? The 8 paragraph bio he wrote didn't mention it one way or the other. If he'd really never eaten a baby, why not mention it in the bio? Is there a history of baby eating? Does he know any baby eaters? Does he eat them raw or at least have the decency to cook the babies he eats? Are you too stupid to figure out that I haven't answered the baby eating question, and instead just put a bunch of silly questions?

Dirty, Dirty Hippies

I get it. Maria Cantwell isn't perfect on the war. And if you want to picket her to show how much better you are than her, I guess go ahead. But I wonder, what's more effective if the goal is long term change, waving signs or having Barbara Boxer, John Kerry, and Russ Feingold as part of the majority on the Foreign Relations Committee? And Barbara Boxer chairing the Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs? If you want the later, I guess you'd better vote for Cantwell. Also, hippies, why not picket Mike McGavick? I mean he's had like a billion campaign kick offs, so the chances have been there.

And maybe the war isn't your thing. Maybe you're upset about her vote on cloture of Alito and not coming immediately to Feingold's side when he blindsided the caucus with his resolution to recognize a piece of paper that says it's bad to conduct illegal wire taps. But I think the resolution of these issues is better served by having Ted Kennedy chair the Judiciary Committee. You know, swearing in witnesses, that sort of thing.

Or maybe like me, on top of those things, you care about ANWR, the Magnuson amendment, the Apolo initiative, Hanford, SUV emission limits, almost every other piece of environmental legislation, the Ashcroft nomination in committee (where Feingold's vote would have made a huge difference), the Roberts nomination, Enron, BPA restructuring, identity theft, shielding tax data, the sales tax deduction, the meth laws, anti-gas company price gouging, the budgets, and most of the tax cuts.

Open Thread

I'm out for the night. But that doesn't mean interesting stuff isn't happening elsewhere in blogtopia (y!s!blahblahblah(yes! 2 skippy references today!)). And possibly elsewehere in the world.

Dear the AP;

So you thought that you would take the word of a bunch of crazies, huh? You thought that if the leader of a group of racist loonies with way too much time on their hands decided to tell you that there were 150 of them despite all evidence that they top out at 22, you were going to take their word? Look, the Minutemen attract mostly racists. So they don't care about how many people come here across Canada.

Their "keeping watch" to stop Canucks from crossing the border was pretty much by definition going to attract fewer Nazis. Not to mention fewer confederate loonies. So their numbers were a bit off.

Also, is there a policy of multiplying the actual number by a factor of more than 6? Because if that's the case, your recent immigration protest coverage should have said over 3 million people protested in L.A. But maybe that's why skippy gave you such an appropriate name.

Here's hoping it works better next time,

Carl Ballard

Now Wait a Minute, Men

It's interesting that when there are anti-war protests, it's always the low number that gets reported, but the Minutemen can just pick a random number and pretend it's true. And get the AP to report it as gospel. Not even a "the loonies said there were 150 people." There's a half formed letter in mind, but I have to get to Drinking Liberally, so I'll probably pound something out tomorrow. Or never.

Loads of Money

Or maybe not. But Darcy Burner's fundraising totals are quite impressive.

Darcy Burner raised over $320,000 in the quarter bringing her total raised to over $536,000. The Burner Campaign exceeded the DCCC’s expectations and met the threshold for their Red-to-Blue program.

The Burner Campaign will complete its FEC report on April 10th and will announce exact and final numbers then.

Some additional information:

Darcy has over $355,000 cash onhand.
1,290 individuals havecontributed 90% of the donations.
Darcy raised over $150,000 inthe last 10 days of the quarter.
Darcy raised over $90,000 inthe last 48 hours of the quarter.
Those of y'all who donated here or anywhere else are totally rad. We're still in the hold versus Reichert, but at least we can assume he won't be getting another $20K from Tom DeLay.

County Conventions

Most of them are coming up next weekend. Of course you had to be at the Caucuses to get to vote. But in any event here's the schedule.

...For more info on the Spokane County Convention, check out the Young Dems.

Kos is Coming Soon

Markos Moulitsas Zúniga (The Daily Kos) and Jerome Armstrong (MyDD), authors of Crashing the Gate, have announced their NW Schedule:

Seattle: Friday, April 7, at 7 p.m. at the Seattle Labor Temple, 2800 1st Ave, Hall 1;

Redmond: Saturday, April 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Marymoor Park, 6046 West Lake Sammamish Pkwy NE;

Olympia: Saturday, April 8, at 7 p.m. at Orca Books, 509 Fourth Ave. E.

Drinking Liberally

I'll be there, but no podcast as the we're all terrified that Dori Monson might not love us any more. And something about the producers being in Europe. But mostly Monson.

What Benny G Said

Mostly. I do think there is an element of me first, call it a wild west mentality, in Seattle. I'd certainly still expect people to help one of their neighbors who had just injured himself. Even if they were homeless. However, you really can't read too much into one incident.

Sky: Still Blue

Tom Tomorrow

So, I saw him Friday and naturally, late Sunday is the best time to write about it. I love the comic, I love the blog, and I loved the presentation. First he read from some comics. I was a bit disturbed that this one got the biggest applause. Still a lot of poking fun at people I don't like very much.

Then Q&A. And he seemed quite upbeat given that he'd had no sleep and the questions asked were distressing. The biggest thing is that he feels that we can get out of this mess. That most of the damage can still be reversed. Anyway, I stupidly forgot my camera, so here's a picture of the signature. I wasn't sure if I should go with Carl, Stephen, or "to whoever picks this up at Free Books" because that's where plenty of my books end up when I'm done with them.

Dino Who's He?

Darryl explains that 4 years is a long time in politics. In a few more words than this post.

Opening Day Thread

Less than 24 hours away. We're all tied for first at this point. The rotation has some problems, especially if there are injuries, but we do have King Felix. We start out with our number one against Los Angeles of Anaheim's. Jaime v. Bartolo Colon. Sigh. I don't know about the bats. Nothing like adding Everett for both team chemistry and, you know, pop flys or something. But it's good to have what looks like a solid catcher now that we're in the post Wilson years. A few links:

Of course the M's official page.

I really like the new commercials.

And if you don't read Nice Guys Finish Third, there's probably something wrong with you.

Deb Wallace

Go read the interview with Lynn Allen.

I was going to put something up about this yesterday, but I guess not. Anyway, the Spokane County Young Democrats have a run down of the initiatives to avoid.
